The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening when a structure, constructed illegally over a 120-foot-deep septic tank, caved in.
The facility, located at Bamburi Mwisho, was in operation at the time of the collapse.
Confirming the incident, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Noor said the body was retrieved shortly before 1 am on Monday.
"We managed to recover the body of one Abdallah Aziz Abdallah, a 54-year-old male at around 00:49 hours. His body was positively identified at the scene by his relative, Seif Aziz Abdallah," Noor stated.
According to police reports, the deceased’s left leg had been severed, likely due to falling debris.
The body, along with the severed limb, was taken to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nyali is currently handling the case, which remains pending under investigation.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, the deceased’s sister, Mwanahamisi Aziz, recounted the moment she received the devastating news.
“I stay in Utange. Someone came by and said there is some bad news. The person, who is also my friend, told me a septic tank had collapsed and among the people trapped was my brother,” she said.
Mwanahamisi revealed that her late brother was a matatu conductor in Bamburi and has left behind a wife and a child.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the Mombasa County Government confirmed that two individuals are still missing and may be trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident has raised serious concerns about urban planning, safety enforcement, and the regulation of informal developments in densely populated parts of the county.
