Healthcare takes lion’s share in Mombasa’s Sh14.6 billion budget for 2025/2026

Mombasa County has allocated Sh4.75 billion to the health sector in its Sh14.6 billion budget estimates for the 2025/2026 financial year, approved by the County Executive Committee.
The budget was approved during a Cabinet meeting held at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital boardroom and will now be tabled before the County Assembly for deliberation and appropriation.

The funds will go towards the construction of Kongowea Level 4 Hospital, the refurbishment of Likoni Sub-County Hospital, the establishment of mental health and rehabilitation centres, and the purchase of advanced diagnostic equipment, including MRI and CT scan machines.
In addition to healthcare, Sh1.43 billion has been set aside for roads, drainage upgrades, and street lighting under the infrastructure and urban mobility sector.
A further Sh1 billion will support water and sanitation projects, including borehole drilling, sewer line extensions, and solar-powered systems.
Education and youth programmes will see the expansion of Early Childhood Development Centres and vocational training facilities.
The county has also partnered with the Technical University of Mombasa to introduce a locally offered medical degree, pending Commission for University Education approval.
Other allocations include investments in waste management, market modernisation, fisheries infrastructure, and fire station upgrades.
The budget will be financed through an equitable share, conditional grants, and a targeted Sh5 billion in local revenue collection.
The Cabinet also resolved to harmonise beach management policies and directed the submission of supplementary budget estimates for the current financial year alongside the new Programme-Based Budget.
The 2025/2026 budget now awaits review and approval by the Mombasa County Assembly.
