Tanzania resumes SGR passenger services after Ruvu derailment

The accident occurred shortly after 8:00 am on Thursday, moments after the train departed Magufuli Station in Dar es Salaam and was approaching Ruvu.

The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has resumed passenger services on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, a day after operations were suspended following the derailment of an electric multiple unit (EMU) train near Ruvu Station in the Coast Region.

According to The Citizen, Thursday’s derailment was the first recorded accident on the electric SGR line since the service began in June 2024. Prior to the incident, the railway had reported only minor technical challenges such as brief power outages.

The accident occurred shortly after 8:00 am on Thursday, moments after the train departed Magufuli Station in Dar es Salaam and was approaching Ruvu. TRC said three cars of the passenger train derailed, but there were no fatalities or reported passenger injuries.

Following the incident, train operations between Dar es Salaam and Ruvu were suspended as investigations and recovery efforts began.

“Three cars of the train derailed at around 8:00 am near Ruvu Station. We confirm there were no fatalities,” TRC stated following the incident.

The corporation deployed a team of technical experts, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and the TRC Managing Director, to assess the damage and determine the cause.

In a press statement issued on October 23, 2025, TRC confirmed that SGR train services had resumed and were running as normal.

“TRC would like to inform the public that SGR train travel services have resumed and are proceeding as usual,” read the statement by Fredy Mwanjala, Head of the Communication and Public Relations Unit.

The corporation apologised to passengers for the disruption, thanking them for their patience.
