SokoLamu: County launches first online marketplace to boost local trade

Vendors were introduced to key features such as system login, dashboard navigation and vendor workflow management.
Traders in Lamu County now have a chance to sell their products beyond local markets following the launch of SokoLamu, the region’s first online marketplace aimed at strengthening small businesses through digital technology.
The platform was unveiled this week during a practical training session held at the Lamu Vocational Training Centre, where vendors were introduced to key features such as system login, dashboard navigation and vendor workflow management.

“This is the first time my business will be going digital aside from my social media platforms. If I can now get customers outside Lamu, that is a game changer for me said Hadija Salim, a tailor from Mokowe.
The new digital space has sparked optimism among many.
Farmer Abdi Omar from Hindi said, “I used to rely on word of mouth or brokers. Now, I will upload my product and let customers come to me.”
Young entrepreneurs like 25-year-old soap-maker Nasra Binti welcome the opportunity. “Social media helped me a bit, but this gives my products a professional platform,” she noted.
However, concerns about sustainability were raised. “Many projects start with energy and die out,” said Ali Kipao, a blacksmith in Mpeketoni, noting, “We want to see real, long-term results.”
Lamu County officials, including Trade CECM Aisha Miraj and Chief Officers Joyce Murimi (Trade) and Ali Muhdhar (ICT), were present at the training, pledging continued support for traders transitioning into the digital space.
“Our goal is to ensure no trader is left behind as we move towards a connected and inclusive economy. SokoLamu reflects our broader vision of linking Lamu’s local talent to national and global markets,” said Aisha.
Chief ICT Officer Ali assured the traders that the county would offer ongoing technical support. “We designed the platform with simplicity in mind and will roll out further training to keep everyone on board,” he said.
The impact of the new digital tool will be measured by how well it bridges the gap between tradition and technology for the county’s diverse business community.
