By |

The move comes against the backdrop of a longstanding struggle to achieve the Constitutional two-thirds gender rule.

In a bid to address gender the Constitutional two-thirds gender rule in Parliament, women MPs have urged women at the Coast to go for leadership slots in government.Mombasa Women Representative Zamzam Mohamed and Likoni MP Mishi Mboko told women at the Coast region to vie for political seats, saying women are still underrepresented both at the national and county level.

Speaking on Thursday in Mombasa while meeting women from the grassroots through the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), the two said women’s participation in politics is vital.

KEWOPA is a caucus of women parliamentarians in Kenya mandated to build the capacity of women at the grassroots, sensitizing them on the opportunities available for economic empowerment and their impact in society.

Recognizing the importance of diverse voices in decision-making processes, they emphasized the need for more women to actively participate in politics to ensure that their perspectives and interests are adequately represented.

By encouraging coastal women to step forward and engage in the political arena, they aim to foster greater gender equality and empowerment within the region's governance structures.

The MPs highlighted the need to have more women in decision-making and their rights.

“We held a successful meeting at the Royal Court Hotel with a delegation of women from Mombasa to discuss women in politics and the demand for women's representation in the county assembly and Parliament,” said Zamzam.

“I encouraged our fellow women to vie for other seats because that is the only way they can be heard. We should also support and encourage our fellow women for that's the only way we can achieve the two-third  gender rule happen.”

Mishi Mboko, on the other hand, said women should start addressing the stark reality of women's underrepresentation in both national and local leadership roles.

“Through engaging discussions, we exchanged potent strategies to amplify women's visibility and dismantle barriers to progress. As a committed and experienced leader, I remain steadfast in my dedication to mentoring women into leadership positions and invite all to join hands with me in creating a more equitable society,” she said.
