Several members of county assembly (MCAs) are of the view that a small group within the executive holds considerable control over county affairs.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has appealed for unity among the county's leaders, urging the assembly to collaborate closely with the executive amid simmering tensions that have threatened to undermine progress.

Several members of county assembly (MCAs) are of the view that a small group within the executive holds considerable control over county affairs. Also, some MCAs have been abstaining from Governor Abdulswamad's events, which observers have interpreted as a silent protest.

While launching the governor's bursary fund on Saturday, Abdulswamad emphasised the importance of transparency and honesty, noting these are the foundations of effective leadership.

"We need to be able to teach and tell the people of Mombasa the truth," stated Governor Abdulswamad. "Here we are all united. Here we speak in one voice. All the MCAs, I respect you equally and love you equally. I will walk the journey with all of you."

Seeking to address any lingering discord within the county leadership, Abdulswamad assumed a stance of accountability and reconciliation, expressing a readiness to forgive past transgressions and forge a path forward based on mutual understanding and cooperation.

"If there are any among us who have erred, I humbly request their forgiveness, as I extend my own to all," he said. "It is imperative that we set aside our differences and unite for the collective good of our beloved Mombasa."

The county chief also cautioned residents against division and actions that sow discord.

"Should we allow ourselves to become divided, it is the people of Mombasa who will ultimately bear the brunt of our failures," he warned. "While it is natural to hold differing opinions, it is essential that we do so with respect and mutual understanding."

Emphasizing his commitment to leadership grounded in unity and solidarity, Abdulswamad pledged to prioritise the well-being of the populace above all else.

"I take leadership responsibility ... my first virtue is to unite the people, not divide them. The day that you will leave me to walk the journey alone is the day we will have let the people of Mombasa down," he said.

He added, "A true leader does not respond with mere words but with actions," he asserted. "We must work together today for the betterment of Mombasa, focusing on the present rather than uncertain future issues."

The bursary fund, under the theme "No Child Left Behind" has seen the issuance of Sh200 million in cheques for the payment of fees for 40,000 day high school students in all 30 wards in Mombasa.
