Robbery suspect who killed accomplice over stolen phone finally arrested

Mohamed Abdirazak Abdisamad will remain in Pangani police station cells as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) investigates the murder of Bashir Omar alias Kwachacha.

A robbery suspect arrested in Kakum, Turkana County while fleeing to Uganda after allegedly killing an accomplice during a fight for a stolen mobile phone in Eastleigh will remain in police custody until July 14.

Mohamed Abdirazak Abdisamad will remain in Pangani police station cells as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) investigates the murder of Bashir Omar alias Kwachacha.

Bashir was stabbed severely on June 26, 2025, during a fight between him, Mohamed and others, including Abdifatah Abdirashid Abdulahi and Abdirahman Mahamud Noor.

Abdifatah and Abdirahman are in custody at the same police station after Detective Constable Suleiman Mwatajiri of DCI Starehe offices obtained orders to detain them.

The four robbery suspects had robbed a member of the public of the mobile phone but disagreed over who would keep it pending disposal and a fight ensued between them during which Bashir was stabbed by "colleagues". He was rushed to Nairobi East hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Mohamed had escaped during the arrest of his "colleagues" at an apartment within Eastleigh but was arrested in Kakuma and detained at the Kakuma police station.

"I am one of the officers investigating a case of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the Penal Code Cap 63 laws of Kenya where the respondent (Mohamed) is suspected to have been involved in the murder of one Bashir Omar alias Kwachacha," Mwatajiri stated in an affidavit filed at the Makadara law courts.

Mwatajiri told the court that the incident was reported at the Eastleigh North police station on June 26 by the deceased's father, Hassan Omar and the same was booked in Occurrence Book (OB) vide 12/26/6/2025.

The detective said the investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder are incomplete as several areas of the investigations are not yet covered.

"Police officers rushed to the scene and established that the deceased had a fight and was stabbed by one of his gang members due to disagreement over a mobile phone they had snatched from a member of the public, and was rushed to the hospital for treatment and was confirmed dead on arrival," stated Mwatajiri.

Preliminary investigations led to the arrest of Abdifatah and Abdirahman on June 27, 2025, at Riverside Lodge within the Eastleigh area, and they were taken to Eastleigh North police station and later transferred to Pangani police station vide OB 116/27/06/2025."

They include interrogating the suspect and recording their statement, recording prosecution witnesses' statements and forwarding mobile phones recovered from the suspects to the forensic lab at the DCI headquarters for analysis.

Orders to detain Mohamed were granted by Senior Resident Magistrate Praxedes Anduke.
