Government steps up security in Mombasa to curb rising gang activity
During Mashujaa Day celebrations in Mombasa, County Commissioner Mohamed Noor vowed to stamp out criminal gangs, boost public safety, and drive major investments aimed at turning the coastal city into a 24-hour economy.
Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Noor has vowed a renewed crackdown on criminal gangs, affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening security and protecting residents from lawlessness.
Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Mombasa, Mohamed said that while crime levels have dropped in recent months, some parts of the county still struggle with organised gangs that disrupt peace and economic activities.

“We have intensified patrols and joint operations in known hotspots to completely wipe out these criminal groups. Our commitment is to ensure every resident feels safe, and that businesses can operate without fear both day and night,” he said.
He emphasised that sustained security efforts are central to Mombasa’s vision of becoming a 24-hour economy, noting that peace and stability are the foundation of development and investor confidence.
Mohamed also highlighted the government’s continued investment in infrastructure and social projects aimed at transforming livelihoods and creating jobs for young people.
Key initiative
He cited the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone as a key initiative expected to drive industrial growth and employ thousands once fully operational.
“The Dongo Kundu project and the affordable housing programme are part of the government’s broader plan to open up opportunities for our youth and promote inclusive growth,” he said.
According to the Commissioner, 2,115 affordable housing units are currently under construction in Nyali Sub-County, with similar projects planned for Mvita. He urged residents to register under the Boma Yangu initiative to benefit from the scheme, noting that the government has already injected Sh23 billion into the housing sector in Mombasa.
At Mombasa Technical College in Port Reitz, construction is ongoing for an eight-storey student hostel featuring modern amenities such as lifts, laundry areas, and entertainment lounges.
Mohamed further revealed that major infrastructure works are underway, including the Jomvu–Mariakani and Nyali–Mtwapa roads—each valued at Sh7 billion—alongside the Sh42 billion Port of Mombasa Expansion Project.
He added that the national government has invested over Sh200 billion in various sectors across Mombasa, underscoring its commitment to driving economic transformation along the Coast.
