The County Assembly of Mombasa has endorsed a motion aimed at promoting the use of Kiswahili in debates, discussions, and official communications within the assembly.

The assembly has also approved the establishment of a weekly plenary session every Wednesday morning, exclusively dedicated to discussions and debates conducted in Kiswahili.

The motion, introduced by Deputy Speaker Fadhili Makarani and supported by Majority Leader Athman Mwamwiri, emphasises the importance of facilitating Kiswahili language training for assembly members and staff.

Enhance proficiency

The Deputy Speaker said the goal is to enhance proficiency in both spoken and written Kiswahili to ensure effective communication among stakeholders.

“By dedicating a specific session to Kiswahili discussions, the assembly aims to enhance proficiency in the language and ensure that all stakeholders can actively participate in assembly proceedings. This decision reflects the county's commitment to preserving its cultural identity and fostering national cohesion,” he said.
