The Taita Taveta County Government has launched the county sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) policy, aiming at eradicating and curbing sexual and gender-based violence in the county.

The policy, launched on Friday during the International Women's Day County Celebrations at Dan Mwazo Hall, also aims at formulating measures aimed at reducing SGBV cases and strategies to effect its implementation in the community.

The International Women's Day celebrations in Voi sub-county, led by Taita Taveta First Lady Sabina Mwadime, centred around the theme "Invest in Women; Accelerate Progress."

The theme underscores the significance of gender equality and empowerment, particularly through poverty alleviation and institutional strengthening.

Investing in women is framed as a human rights imperative, calling for proactive measures such as gender-responsive financing, transitioning to a sustainable economy, and fostering a supportive societal framework to amplify women's voices.

Empowering women

During the event, Sabina underscored the importance of empowering and supporting women in society, emphasising the dual imperative of celebration and protection.

Recognising women's indispensable roles, she highlighted the necessity of fostering their success in economic, social, and political arenas, ultimately contributing to a more balanced society.

"As we celebrate women today, let's not only empower them but also ensure their protection, as they are integral to society. The flourishing of women across various domains brings equilibrium to our communities," Sabina said.

The County Executive Committee Member for Youth, Sports, Gender, Culture, and Social Services, Shadrack Mutungi, expressed gratitude for the indispensable role women play in society.

He emphasised their status as foundational pillars and highlighted the ripple effect of investing in their well-being, ultimately fostering community-wide happiness.

Recognising women's nurturing roles as mothers, sisters, and daughters, he advocated for their protection and empowerment.

He reiterated, "Women are the bedrock of our society; their empowerment brings joy to all. Let's ensure the safety and advancement of our women and girls."

The county government reaffirmed its dedication to providing accessible resources, including counselling services, legal assistance and shelters to survivors.

Additionally, plans were announced to intensify awareness campaigns and educational initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of respect, consent, and gender equality within the community.
