Mombasa County launches crackdown on public urination

In a bid to tackle public urination in the streets of Mombasa, the county launched a crackdown targeting individuals who neglect the use of public toilet facilities.

The exercise spearheaded by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment and Solid Waste Management, Francis Thoya, aims to address sanitation concerns and promote responsible behaviour among residents and visitors alike.

"It is evident that the behaviour of some individuals in Mombasa is both disappointing and distressing. Choosing to relieve oneself on the streets rather than using designated facilities is unacceptable," Thoya said.

The crackdown saw a number of individuals apprehended while urinating on the side roads.

Thoya emphasised the importance of upholding cleanliness and hygiene standards, highlighting the detrimental impact of such irresponsible actions on the overall well-being and image of the region.

"Those caught engaging in reckless urination practices will face consequences," Thoya warned.

"We will not tolerate behaviour that compromises the cleanliness of our streets and poses health hazards to our residents. Regardless of the circumstances, there are no excuses for disregarding public hygiene."

Through enforcement and education, the county aims to instil a culture of responsible behaviour and uphold the standards of cleanliness in the coastal city.

Last year, Mombasa County introduced penalties and legal action for individuals and businesses who fail to properly segregate and dispose of solid waste.

The measures include a fine of Sh2,000 for waste generators and Sh50,000 for non-compliant businesses, along with a one-month sentence for failure to pay the fine.

Additionally, waste collectors face a penalty of Sh10,000 for collecting waste that hasn't been separated at its source.
