150 arrested in multi-agency crackdown targeting muggers in Mombasa

To combat rising incidents of muggings, a coordinated operation was launched on Wednesday in Mombasa County, spearheaded by a joint task force comprising members of the National Police Service and Mombasa County Enforcement officers.
According to a police report seen by The Eastleigh Voice, the operation commenced at 11:00 am, targeting notorious areas within the Mombasa Central Business District, including Makadara grounds, Mama Ngina, Jalaram Feeding Centre, Docks Roundabout, and Mbaraki Cemetery.

“During the planned raid, authorities successfully apprehended a total of 140 adults and 10 juveniles suspected of involvement in criminal activities related to mugging. In addition to the arrests, law enforcement agencies dismantled several hideouts utilized by the perpetrators and seized a cache of crude weapons used in their illicit activities,” police said.

The arrested individuals have been detained at the Central Police Station, where they await their scheduled court appearance on Thursday morning.
Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Nur noted the crackdown underscores the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of residents and visitors within Mombasa County.
“After the circulation of a viral video depicting criminal activities, we managed to conduct an operation where we apprehended additional suspects attempting to engage in crime," he said.
He added that the team's goal is to ensure the eradication of criminal activities within the CBD area.

In the video footage circulating online, a man, holding goods he had purchased, was suddenly ambushed from by a youth who was later joined by about two other men in the daylight robbery.
