The project aims to enhance ecological balance and improve the quality of life in the region.

Residents of Taita Taveta are celebrating the launch of the Urban Green Corridor initiative under the Climate Justice for Human Security Project, a transformative effort designed to revitalise urban areas into green, sustainable environments. Spearheaded by Haki Africa in partnership with the Taita Taveta County Government, the project aims to enhance ecological balance and improve the quality of life in the region.

Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime praised the initiative as a pivotal step towards sustainable urban development and environmental conservation. "This project represents a major advancement in our efforts to combat climate change and enhance urban living conditions," he stated.

Residents are eager to see the benefits of the initiative. Mary Mwikali, a mother of three from Voi, highlighted the anticipated improvements in air quality and recreational opportunities for children. "This project promises to provide much-needed green spaces where our kids can play safely and enjoy nature," she said.

James Mwacharo, a resident, emphasised the relief the project will bring from extreme urban heat. "The green corridors will help reduce the unbearable heat we experience, making our town more livable," he noted.

Lydia Mkachala, a teacher, expressed excitement about the educational potential of the new green spaces. "These areas will not only be relaxing but will also serve as valuable outdoor classrooms," she added.

Mkachala stated that the presence of the urban green corridor project allows them to teach pupils about the environment, biodiversity, and the necessity of conservation in the community.

Young people in the community are especially eager. Daniel Mwangemi, a university student, showed enthusiasm.

"I am happy with the new green spaces. They allow us to participate in outdoor activities and encourage a better lifestyle. It also provides an opportunity for us to participate in community projects and learn more about environmental sustainability.

Haki Africa and the county administration intend to expand the Urban Green Corridor initiative to other areas of the county, with assistance from ForumCiv Eastern & Southern Africa and other partners. "We are committed to working with local governments, partners, and the community to achieve climate justice and enhance human security through sustainable urban development," Haki Africa said.

Another resident, Salome Mrondo, sees the project as an important step towards a more sustainable future. "It is important to ensure that future generations inherit a healthier environment. We must consider long-term, and this program is a welcome move in that direction. It gives me hope that our children and grandkids will live in a better environment," she remarked.

According to her, Voi's Urban Green Corridor is a key step towards developing a greener, more sustainable urban ecosystem that benefits both human security and environmental balance.
