Lifeguards swiftly intervened, rescuing both individuals. One required medical attention and was transported to Kilifi County Referral Hospital with the assistance of emergency medical services.
Kilifi South County Commissioner Samuel Mutisya emphasised the importance of heeding safety warnings. "With the holiday season in full swing, our beaches are more crowded than ever. We want to ensure everyone has a safe environment to enjoy themselves, so please be vigilant and follow safety advisories. The strong waves forecasted could turn a fun day at the beach into a dangerous situation,” he said.
Local beach operators are also concerned about the safety of visitors. Amani Kalama stated, "We love seeing visitors enjoying our beaches, but the sea can be unpredictable. We advise everyone to stay within designated swimming areas and heed any warnings from lifeguards. Your safety is our top priority."
Ismail Kassimu, another beach operator, noted "The current conditions are challenging, and while we strive to make your beach experience enjoyable, we must emphasise the importance of caution. It is crucial to follow guidelines to avoid accidents."
Lifeguards mentioned they have also outlined measures to ensure tourists' and visitors of their safety while at the beaches.
Answari Abdi, a lifeguard, explained, "The sea can shift from calm to hazardous without warning. We urge everyone, particularly students on holiday, to be mindful of the changing conditions and follow all safety guidelines."
He stressed the need for cooperation from beachgoers. "Our team is dedicated to keeping everyone safe, but we need your cooperation. Please pay attention to safety signs and lifeguard instructions to ensure a secure visit to the beach."
