Kwale governor urges women to embrace religious studies for knowledge, empowerment

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has urged women in the county to pursue Islamic studies, regardless of age, to enhance their knowledge and empowerment.

Speaking at the Muungano Madrassa Hafla in Chiuriro, Msambweni, on Sunday, Governor Fatuma highlighted the vital role of religious education in improving women's lives and combating abuse and discrimination.

Governor Fatuma observed that many women experience oppression and harsh conditions, especially during Eddah, a period a Muslim woman must observe after losing her husband, and that they occasionally face pressure to renounce leadership roles under the pretext of traditional beliefs.

"Due to a lack of religious teaching, some women are denied their inheritance rights and are forced to endure inhume treatment while observing Eddah," she said.

She emphasised that understanding religious teachings can empower women and help them overcome these challenges.

"I commend the women of Muungano Madrassa for their dedication to religious education. Age should not be a barrier to learning. I urge more women in Kwale to engage in religious studies to grow spiritually and intellectually. My administration will support your educational efforts with resources and encouragement," Governor Fatuma said.

Sheikh Rajab Ndaro, who was among the guests, emphasised the need for women to get religious education because they are the first teachers to their children.

"A woman who understands Islamic teachings will be able to guide her children to the right path to avoid them going astray," said the Sheikh.

In addition, numerous madrasas provide education for adults.

Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, and Feisal Bader, the Member of Parliament for Msambweni, also attended the event.

CS Mvurya stressed the importance of unity among leaders in driving the country's progress.

"We stand with Governor Fatuma and fully support her vision for Kwale. Together, we will ensure that the development plans for the county are realised," he said.

MP Bader shared similar views, focussing on community empowerment.

"Our priority is the welfare and progress of Kwale's people." We will continue supporting initiatives that uplift and empower our community," he said.

The Muungano Madrassa, based in Ramisi Ward, is dedicated to advancing Islamic education for women, helping them achieve spiritual and intellectual growth.
