Transforming Mombasa's Old Town: A local leader's vision for change amidst rising challenges

The once-bustling historic Old Town in Mombasa faces escalating issues of youth unemployment and crumbling infrastructure, prompting a call for transformative change.

As the community grapples with these challenges, one local leader’s vision offers a glimmer of hope.

Abdirahman Abdulkadir Hussein, the 34-year-old Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Old Town, has emerged as a pivotal figure in this period of upheaval.

Born and raised in Nairobi and educated at Maseno University and the University of Nairobi, Abdirahman’s journey to Mombasa was driven by a desire to make a tangible impact.

Despite not being a native of Mombasa, he has worked diligently to integrate into the local community and address its pressing issues.

Abdirahman’s engagement with Old Town began in earnest during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.

Witnessing the plight of small business owners who struggled without relief from local authorities, Abdirahman was inspired to run for office. His campaign, branded under the slogan Anza Fresh (A new beginning, a fresh start) encapsulates the idea of leaving the past behind and embarking on a new phase in life.

“It encourages embracing new opportunities with a refreshed perspective and attitude. Together, this slogan inspires hope, resilience, and the courage to embrace change, highlighting the potential for new achievements and personal development,” he said.

“Since assuming office, I have worked with friends and philanthropists to enrol 123 students in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes. I believe this is one of the most effective ways to combat unemployment in the area.”

Viable career options

His commitment to education and skills training is seen as a critical step towards providing young people with viable career options and reducing their involvement in criminal activities.

In addition to educational initiatives, Abdirahman has prioritised addressing Old Town’s infrastructure issues. The area’s roads, long neglected, are now undergoing significant upgrades. “For the first time in many years, the roads are being upgraded to Cabro standards,” he explained.

The MCA has also tackled the persistent problem of sewerage, which has plagued the community for decades, with ongoing efforts to find a permanent solution.

Abdirahman’s involvement in the community extends beyond his legislative work. As the president of Mombasa United Football Club, which competes in the National Super League, he has invested heavily in nurturing local football talent. “Sports can play a crucial role in engaging the youth and keeping them away from crime. My investment in the local football club is part of a broader strategy to offer young people positive alternatives,” he said.

He became the first MCA to sponsor a private bill since devolution, and he currently serves on the Speaker’s Panel, where he chairs sessions. “My role in the assembly has been focused on legislation that benefits the residents. I have worked to ensure that the needs of Old Town are represented,” he stated.

One of Abdirahman’s major proposals is the Ward Development Programme Act, which he believes will promote more equitable development across the county’s wards. “This Act will allow residents to prioritise their development needs and provide better oversight of local projects,” he said.

Despite Abdirahman’s proactive approach, some residents continue to express concerns about the pace of change and the effectiveness of the new initiatives. The challenge remains to balance rapid development with sustainable, long-term solutions that address the root causes of the area’s problems.

Abdirahman’s efforts reflect a broader hope for renewal and progress. Whether his vision will fully address the community’s needs remains to be seen, but his work marks a significant step in Old Town’s ongoing journey towards revitalisation and improvement.
