Mombasa County residents will soon have access to free cancer screenings, following an announcement by Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.

The initiative, which aims to promote early detection and treatment, was unveiled during a memorial service for actress Winnie Bwire, popularly known as Dida in the Swahili telenovela 'Sultana', who recently succumbed to cancer.

The memorial, held at the Little Theatre Club, drew notable artists from across the country who came to celebrate Bwire’s life and career.

Governor Nassir used the occasion to reveal the county’s upcoming cancer awareness efforts, stressing the importance of early diagnosis. "With cancer awareness month just around the corner, we are rolling out free screening services for all residents," he announced.

He encouraged locals to seize the opportunity, emphasising that the screenings could save lives.

"Cancer is a silent killer, and we must be proactive in fighting it. Early detection is key to increasing survival chances," said Nassir.

The governor paid heartfelt tribute to Bwire, remembering her as a dedicated actress whose work resonated with many.

“Her passing is a huge loss to the industry. The outpouring of love here is a testament to the impact she had on so many lives,” he said.

In Bwire’s honor, Governor Nassir also proposed the creation of a youth-focused studio at the Little Theatre Club, aimed at fostering local talent.

He called on the theatre’s leadership, alongside youth mentor Mahmood Noor and Gender and Youth County Executive Ken Ambani, to collaborate on bringing the project to life.

“We have had plans for this studio in the past, but now, more than ever, we must make it a reality to honour Winnie’s legacy,” Nassir said.
