Mombasa takes healthcare to workplaces with launch of community health promoter desks

County officials say the initiative is part of wider efforts to ease the disease burden through early detection and prompt intervention.

Mombasa County has rolled out Community Health Promoter (CHP) desks at workplaces across the region to boost preventive healthcare and bring essential medical services closer to residents.

The initiative aims to ensure that even the busiest residents can access health checks and vital information without disrupting their daily routines.

County officials say the move is part of broader efforts to reduce the burden of disease by encouraging early detection and timely intervention.

The desks are designed to meet people where they are with the county, noting many residents have limited time to visit hospitals due to work and other responsibilities; hence, by offering essential health services at the workplace, the county is bridging a critical gap.

The CHP desks provide a range of services, including blood pressure screening, blood sugar testing, weight monitoring, health education, counselling, assisted HIV testing, deworming, and referrals for further medical attention when needed.

“In the event any health concerns are detected, individuals are promptly referred to the nearest health facility for diagnosis and continued care. Health workers involved in the programme are also trained to offer guidance on lifestyle changes that can prevent long-term health complications,” the county health officials noted.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, with many saying it helps raise awareness and fosters a culture of regular health check-ups.

Health experts believe the initiative could significantly lower the rates of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which often go undiagnosed until complications arise.

Mombasa County says it will monitor the impact of the desks and explore the possibility of expanding the model to more workplaces, institutions, and public spaces.
