Hashim Dagane to face murder charges in Eastleigh women killings case

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has notified the High Court in Nairobi of the intention to charge the man suspected of killing four women from Eastleigh in October with murder.

The suspect, Hashim Dagane Muhumed, also known as Hashim Mohamed Khalif, will face charges for the murder of Dahab Daud Said, alias Waris, who was killed in the Kyumbi area of Machakos County on the night of October 21, along with three others.

Hashim, who had fraudulently acquired a Kenyan national identity card, has not yet been formally charged but has been informed that he will face murder charges.

Senior Assistant DPP Gikui Gichuhi, head of the Homicides Prosecutions Unit at the Office of the DPP, notified the Milimani High Court that the suspect will be charged with the murders of the four women.

"The court is hereby informed by the DPP on behalf of the Republic that the above-named accused person (Hashim) is charged with the following offence: murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code, Cap 63, Laws of Kenya," part of the statement reads.

It specifies that Hashim is accused of murdering Dahabo Daud Said alias Waris on the night of October 21, 2024, in the Kyumbi area of Machakos County.

The particulars of the offence also list three additional charges of murder. Hashim is accused of killing Waris' relatives, Amina Abdirashid Dhahir and Musayba Abdi Mohamed, on the same night in the Parklands area of Nairobi, as well as a fourth victim, Deka Abdinoor Gorane.

Hashim will also be charged with murdering Deka at a short-stay rental apartment in Lavington Estate, Nairobi, on the night of October 29-30, 2024. Deka had been reported missing at the California Police Station in Eastleigh, and her remains – boiled bones and a skeleton – were discovered dumped at Lang'ata Cemetery on November 1.

Hashim, who had been living with Deka at the Lavington apartment, is suspected of killing her after she found out of the killings of the other victims.

Justice Diana Mochache of the Kibera High Court has ordered that Hashim be detained at Nairobi Area Remand and Allocation Prison in the Industrial Area until January 21, 2025, pending the preparation of formal charges.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicides Unit established that Hashim is a Somali national, as confirmed by his passport, and that he had fraudulently registered as a Kenyan.

The head of the DCI Homicides Unit, Martin Nyunguto, and his team are preparing to oppose bail and bond terms when the suspect applies for release after being charged.

A taxi driver, Jared Mongare, who was arrested in connection with Deka's murder, has been discharged without charges. However, his car, suspected to have been used by Hashim to dispose of Deka’s remains, will be detained at the DCI headquarters as evidence in the case.
