Diani police launch crackdown on shops selling stolen goods

By |

OCPD Francis Gachoki says more than 50 suspects have been arrested and stolen items worth over Sh1 million recovered.

Police in Diani, Kwale County, are cracking down on shops selling second-hand items and scrap metal, following allegations that they trade primarily in stolen goods.

On Monday, Msambweni divisional police commander (OCPD) Francis Gachoki said some arrested suspects confessed to selling stolen goods at these shops, hence the operation that has already marked several stores for raids.

As such, he issued a warning, asking shop owners to reject goods that do not come with receipts.

"Second-hand shops offer an easy disposal place for stolen goods but be warned: if you are caught with stolen goods, we are going to take all your goods and close the shop. Be sure to ask for a receipt from clients before accepting the items," he said.

Early this month, Gachoki said more than 50 suspects had been arrested and stolen items worth over Sh1 million recovered.

Locals who went to identify items at the station found some of their stolen belongings there, he said, adding electronics, utensils and motorcycles featured prominently.

"We have a case where a boda boda was stolen in Diani but recovered in another county. If someone tries to sell you a phone or electronic device of any type, please make sure you ask for proof that the items belong to them," he said.

The OCDP further warned that anyone found with stolen goods would be forced to identify the seller for further action by the police.

For the past year, cases of insecurity, involving theft, have risen in Diani, with the victims dying or suffering injuries.

Security officers had resolved to involve a multi-agency team to combat crime and have reported some success thus far.
