Kenya Army officer among 99 arrested in Mombasa drugs, crime crackdown

A Kenya Army officer was among 99 individuals arrested as security authorities intensified their fight against drug trafficking and criminal activities in Mombasa County.

The major operation, known as Operation Usalama involved a coordinated effort among multiple law enforcement agencies and focused on several high-crime areas across Mombasa County.

The army officer, who was apprehended with 80 rolls of cannabis sativa, was one of the notable arrests during the crackdown.

In addition, the operation resulted in the detention of individuals involved in various criminal activities.

The raids, which targeted locations in Kengeleni, Magodoroni, and Shanzu, led to the seizure of a range of narcotics including heroin, marijuana, and diazepam.

The suspects have been transported to Mjambere Police Station and are scheduled to appear in court on September 16, 2024.

Other illegal activities

Beyond drug-related offences, the operation also addressed other illegal activities. At Makupa Police Station, 24 individuals were arrested for illegal dumping, and six gambling machines were confiscated. These individuals, involved in violations of Mombasa’s municipal regulations, are also expected to face court proceedings on September 16, 2024.

Another significant aspect of the crackdown occurred at Central Police Station, where a separate operation led to the detention of 75 suspects. These individuals are believed to be linked to muggings and other violent criminal activities. They are scheduled for arraignment alongside those from the Makupa operation.

“The substantial number of arrests and seizures during this operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and criminal activities in Mombasa. We are dedicated to ensuring that those involved are held accountable for their actions,” County Commissioner Mahmoud Noor said.

Noor assured residents of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety. “Our work is far from finished. We will continue to intensify our operations to maintain a secure environment for our community and address all forms of criminal activity. We remain vigilant and resolute in our mission to keep Mombasa safe.”
