Tragedy as employee stabs Eastleigh businessman to death in water dispute

By |

According to a police report, a confrontation arose between Mohammed and Zakaria at their workplace on Sabatiat Road in Eastleigh Airbase Ward, stemming from a "misunderstanding."

On Tuesday evening, the manager of a water distribution company in Eastleigh, Nairobi, was stabbed to death by one of his employees. A police report seen by The Eastleigh Voice says Mohammed Osman, 26, was stabbed in the chest by Zakaria Yusuf, the driver of one of the company's water bowsers. The tragic incident was compounded by the fact that the two were first cousins.

The police report says a confrontation arose between Mohammed and Zakaria at their workplace on Sabatiayet Road in Eastleigh Airbase Ward, stemming from a "misunderstanding." Tensions escalated, leading to the fatal knife attack.

Following the incident, Zakaria attempted to flee the scene on a motorcycle but was apprehended by officers from the Starehe Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who were on patrol on Eastleigh's Third Avenue. They were alerted by a resident.

The police report noted that the suspect had bloodstains on his clothes and shoes. A subsequent search inside the vehicle in which he tried to escape found a blood-stained knife believed to be the murder weapon.

The suspect was taken to the Ruaraka police station for further investigations ahead of arraignment, and the escape vehicle to the Pangani DCI yard.

Mohammed's body, found on the roadside, was taken to the Abubakar mosque. Source said he was buried on the same day, according to Islamic burial practices.

This tragic incident mirrors a disturbing trend as Eastleigh has witnessed similar incidents in the past. It also underscores the persistent problem of severe water shortages in the neighbourhood, leading to reliance on water bowsers.

Moreover, the attack brings attention to the existence of dangerous cartels among mobile water suppliers, who resort to any means to conduct their dubious business in the area. In September 2022, a similar incident resulted in the death of a resident named Abdifatah Hassan Barre, who was stabbed after a disagreement over the supply of water.
