Eastleigh's former house helps farm their way to empowerment

In the heart of Eastleigh Airbase ward, a group of 25 determined women has rewritten the narrative of a once dilapidated land.

In the heart of Eastleigh Airbase Ward, a group of 25 determined women has rewritten the narrative of a once dilapidated and grim piece of land, known as the Center playground.

What was once a haunt for street children and a site of unspeakable crimes, this area has now blossomed into a thriving commercial farm, thanks to the relentless efforts of these women.

Formerly engaged in the laundry business, these women faced the harsh reality of inconsistent earnings. Faced with adversity, they approached the area Chief seeking permission to revitalize the deplorable state of the Center playground. This piece of land was not only a breeding ground for crime, especially rape, but also served as an open-air latrine for street boys and some local boys engaged in football games here.

In 2022, the women embarked on a journey of transformation, breathing new life into the desolate area. Through hard work and dedication, they cleared the land, turning it into a lush expanse adorned with mature trees.

The transformation is nothing short of remarkable, and the once-sordid playground now stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives.

Some of the crops that the women group has planted on the piece of land.

Not content with merely cleaning up the area, these enterprising women diversified their efforts. They planted various crops, including vegetables like Kales, onions, tomatoes and maize, creating a sustainable source of food for themselves and a potential income stream.

Their harvest not only provides food for their families but also serves as a source of income when others purchase their produce.

Jacinta Wamuthoi, the chair lady of this commendable group, proudly states, "Look at us now, even if we do not get money, we have food."

Maureen Onyiko a member of this group says she will never go back to be a maid. She hopes that no one will come and kick them out of this section of the field. "Being a maid was tough, I am doing much better here," noted Maureen.

The transformation from being reliant on unreliable laundry contracts to self-sufficiency through agriculture has elevated their standard of living. No longer tethered to the uncertainty of waiting for work, these women have carved out a path to stability.

However, their journey is not without its challenges. Top among them is the scarcity of water, a vital resource for irrigating their flourishing farm. Jacinta highlights the increasing cost of water as a significant hurdle. Despite the bountiful harvest, the rising expenses associated with maintaining the farm pose a threat to their newfound prosperity.

Moreover, the women face obstacles in acquiring the necessary equipment to enhance their farming capabilities. The lack of proper tools hinders the efficiency of their operations, underscoring the need for external support to sustain and expand their agricultural endeavors.

As this group of resilient women continues to overcome challenges, their success story serves as an inspiration to the community and beyond.

Their initiative not only revitalized a neglected space but also empowered them to break free from the limitations of their previous livelihoods. In the face of adversity, these women have demonstrated the transformative power of collective effort and determination.
