He highlighted the remarkable development of Eastleigh since his last visit 32 years ago.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday said Eastleigh has undergone significant changes over the past three decades.

He highlighted the remarkable development of Eastleigh since his last visit 32 years ago.

Speaking at the BBS Mall, President Hassan reflected on Eastleigh's evolution from a single-bank area to a commercial hub.

"The last time I came here was 32 years ago. How Eastleigh was at that time is far much different from how it is today," he said.

He observed that BBS mall alone now hosts 15 commercial banks, a stark contrast to the one bank that existed during his previous visit.

President Hassan attributed Eastleigh's growth to the welcoming nature of Kenya and its people. He expressed gratitude to Kenya for providing a haven for Somali investors during times of crisis in Somalia.

"When Somalia was in crisis and its people had nowhere to invest, Kenya provided a safe place," he said, acknowledging the supportive role of Kenya in the development of Eastleigh.

The President also emphasised the strong current relationship between Kenya and Somalia, which facilitates discussions on internal and international issues.

"We discuss fighting Al-Shabaab, how to make the Horn of Africa more peaceful, and how to compete with other parts of Africa and the world," he noted.

President Hassan's visit to BBS Mall marked the second presidential visit to the mall, following President William Ruto's visit in March.

He was accompanied by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Bare Duale and Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim. They were welcomed by Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan and the mall's top leadership, led by Chairman Maalim Weli.

In his speech, CS Aden echoed President Hassan's sentiments, highlighting the improved relationship between Kenya and Somalia.

He emphasised the importance of discussing security and development issues between the two nations.

"The government of William Ruto has a good relationship with that of Somalia. We are close relatives nowadays," said Aden.

He also expressed satisfaction with Somalia's membership in the East African Community (EAC), which enhances business opportunities between the two countries.

MP Yusuf praised the transformation brought about by BBS Mall, crediting Chairman Maalim Weli for his vision.

"We are proud of Eastleigh, and BBS Mall has greatly changed the face of Eastleigh, thanks to Maalim Weli," said the MP.

The mall, located opposite Pumwani Hospital – bounded by General Waruinge Street to the South has witnessed high-profile visits since it opened its doors in 2023.

It has an impressive 130,000 square metres and is the largest in East and Central Africa.

Eastleigh, known for its bustling trading hub, now has a grand and clean feel with the BBS Mall. It has more than 15 banks, more than 20 restaurants, 1,500 parking slots, hospitals, cinema halls, and various retail outlets.

Notably, it is the only mall in Kenya with many parking slots, ample security, and a 24-hour water and electricity supply, backed up by high-tech generators.
