President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud unveiled Somalia’s ambitious Centennial Vision 2060 Development Process at the sixth National Economic Council forum in Mogadishu. The event, spanning two days and attended by different Somali government officials, civil society representatives, and international partners, was organised by the National Economic Council (NEC). President Mohamud underscored that this visionary initiative aims to lay the groundwork for improving livelihoods, achieving liberation and stability, bolstering economic infrastructure, and effectively governing the nation.

During his address, the President shed light on the multifaceted challenges confronting the Somali populace, including conflicts, insecurity, droughts, and floods. He emphasised that Vision 2060 serves as a crucial bridge between the present and future generations, with the overarching goal of propelling Somalia towards a future characterised by prosperity and advancement.

In his statement, President Hassan expressed, "Today marks the inception of a transformative journey towards the prosperity and advancement of our nation. The Centennial Vision 2060 reflects our unwavering commitment to surmount existing hurdles and lay a robust foundation for the prosperity of future generations."

The Vision 2060 blueprint encompasses three distinct phases:

  1. Near-term goals (2023-2025): Prioritising stability, combating terrorism, and addressing pressing humanitarian concerns.
  2. Mid-term goals (2025-2040): Focused on fortifying institutional capacity, reforming governmental structures, and fostering good governance practices.
  3. Long-term goals (2035-2060): Centered on stimulating economic growth, elevating living standards, and nurturing social cohesion and integration.

Somalia, which became part of the East African community this week, is now directing its efforts towards liberating itself from the grips of internal warfare that have plagued the nation since 1991.

In his inaugural address to the Somali people following the country's inclusion in the EAC, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud pledged a brighter future for Somalia, emphasising the pursuit of prosperity.
