Parents and guardians are advised to ensure that their children return to school for the third term as per the school calendar.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called off its planned strike, initially set to begin on Monday, August 26, following productive negotiations with the government.

In a press release from the Ministry of Education on Sunday, the government expressed gratitude towards the teachers and their leaders for their dedication to the best interests of learners. However, its sister union, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) said the strike is still on.

"We assure our teachers of the government's genuine commitment to addressing all their legitimate concerns," the Ministry said.

The Ministry highlighted recent developments, including the provision of resources for the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) effective from July 1.

Additionally, resources have been allocated for retooling teachers to implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

"Consultative approach"

"Through a consultative approach with stakeholders, we will work together to achieve a satisfactory resolution of all outstanding matters to enhance a conducive and favourable working environment for our dedicated teachers," the Ministry noted.

Parents and guardians are advised to ensure that their children return to school for the third term as per the school calendar.

The Ministry has already disbursed Sh 21.5 billion per capita to all basic education institutions to support a smooth resumption of school operations.

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu, in a press release, explained that after evaluating all available options and considering the government's commitment, the union decided to withdraw the strike notice.

"Given the commitment shown by both the government and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) towards advancing the education agenda, we have directed the Secretary-General to withdraw the strike notice," Oyuu said.

"The National Executive Council (NEC) has agreed to withdraw the strike action notice that was set to expire at midnight on August 25. We assure our members that the union is committed to resolving the remaining matters. However, should the issues persist, we will revert to our initial position."

KNUT has instructed teachers to resume their duties immediately and urged members to stay resolute as the union continues to address the outstanding issues.
