Ethiopia mourns legendary historian professor, Lapiso Delebo, who shaped generations of scholars
Ethiopia is mourning the loss of Professor Lapiso G. Delebo, a historian whose research and teachings shaped generations and celebrated the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
Ethiopia is mourning the loss of Professor Lapiso G. Delebo, a veteran historian who dedicated his life to researching, documenting, and teaching the country's rich history and cultural heritage.
Professor Delebo's research and publications, including contributions to major historical texts, have shaped how generations of students and scholars across Africa understand Ethiopia's past.
He was celebrated for highlighting Ethiopia's shared values, cultural diversity, and linguistic unity, playing a central role in deepening knowledge of the nation's social and historical heritage.
In a statement on X, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed profound sorrow over the professor's passing, confirming that he died while receiving medical treatment on Sunday.
"The renowned historian Professor Lapiso G. Delebo passed away today while receiving medical treatment, and I heard the news with great sorrow. I pray that his soul may rest in eternal peace and that he grants us the strength to comfort his friends and family," he said.
Champion of Ethiopia's heritage
Ethiopian President Taye Atske-Selassie also paid tribute, describing Professor Lapiso as a distinguished scholar and a champion of Ethiopia's heritage.
"I express profound sorrow for the loss of Professor Lapiso G. Delebo from this world. Professor Lapiso was engaged in research on the history of Ethiopian political thought and was a great scholar of knowledge. I extend my condolences to their family and friends," he said.
IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu highlighted Professor Lapiso's lasting impact on Ethiopian history and culture, noting his research on the Italo-Ethiopian War, Oromo history, and the origins of Meskel.
"Professor Delebo's scholarly contributions—from his seminal work on the Italo-Ethiopian War of 1887-1896: From Dogali to Adwa, to his insightful explorations of Oromo history, the origins of Meskel, and the sweeping narrative of Ethiopian civilization from the era of Lucy four million years ago to the founding of modern Addis Ababa—have not only educated generations but also inspired a deeper appreciation for the complexities, resilience, and triumphs of our past," he said.
Gebeyehu added that even though Professor Lapiso has passed, his contributions to history, culture, and education continue to inspire people everywhere.
"In this time of grief, please know that Professor Delebo's spirit endures in every page turned, every story shared, and every heart touched by his profound insights," he said.
According to the professor's family, he will be laid to rest on Tuesday, November 11.
