Recent clashes in Ethiopia's Amhara region have resulted in the tragic death of approximately 50 civilians, according to a United Nations report dated September 17, 2023. The region, Ethiopia's second most populated, has been marred by ongoing turmoil for months, with recent confrontations primarily between the Ethiopian military and Fano, an ethnic Amhara militia.
Seif Magango, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, emphasized the urgency of all parties refraining from unlawful attacks and taking necessary measures to protect civilians. The statement expressed particular concern about the devastating impact of drone strikes and other forms of violence on the population in the Amhara region.

In response to the escalating violence, a phone conversation between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken took place on Friday. According to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, Blinken stressed the significance of dialogue and negotiation in resolving the conflict.
The conversation also touched upon the commendation of Prime Minister Abiy for permitting monitoring changes, a move that prompted the resumption of US food assistance to Ethiopia. The assistance had been halted in June due to allegations of a coordinated effort to divert food amidst the country's recovery from a brutal two-year conflict in the Tigray region.
