FKF Cup: Nairobi United edge Mara Sugar to book final spot against Gor Mahia

Nairobi United will face Gor Mahia in the Mozzart Bet Cup final after a dramatic semi-final win over Mara Sugar on penalties. The showdown promises high stakes, with a CAF Confederation Cup slot and Sh2 million prize awaiting the winner.

Nairobi United will face Gor Mahia FC in the finals of this year's Mozzart Bet Cup after beating Mara Sugar 3-1 on post-match penalties on Sunday afternoon, after the game ended 1-1 in normal time.

Nairobi United's strong run in the tournament included victories over Global Connections, Tusker FC, KCB FC, and Kakamega Homeboyz FC in the rounds of 64, 32, 16, and the quarterfinals, respectively.

Meanwhile, Mara Sugar defeated Webuye Sportiff, AFC Leopards, Compel FC, and Kenya Police FC to earn their place in the semifinals.

During the Sunday contest, both teams struggled to control the game in the first half, which ended goalless before Nairobi took the lead in the 54th minute through substitute Michael Karamor's finish from a corner.

Mara Sugar equalised just four minutes later with Lameck Omondi's strike from the edge of the box. However, Nairobi dominated proceedings after the equaliser but failed to convert their chances, sending the game into extra time.

In the shootout, John Otieno, Brian Ogutu, and Rodgers Angal scored for Nairobi United, while Gideon Omondi missed his shot by sending it over the bar.

Mara Sugar only managed to convert one penalty through Fredrick Ng'iela, as Erick Juma, Haun Thomas, and Robert Obaga all failed to score, ending the club's run in the Mozzart Bet Cup.

Nairobi's win sets up a final against Gor Mahia, who secured their spot in this year's Mozzart Bet Cup final after narrowly defeating Murang'a Seal 5-3 on penalties in a thrilling semi-final at Dandora Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday, May 25.

The tightly contested match ended 2-2 in regular time, leading to a shootout where Gor Mahia kept their composure to advance.

The winner of the final, scheduled for later this month, will walk away with the trophy, a cash prize of Sh2 million and an opportunity to represent Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup.
