Gor Mahia to refund fans after Mashemeji Derby postponement

Gor Mahia have confirmed they will refund fans who purchased tickets for the postponed Mashemeji Derby, which was originally set for May 11. The clash with AFC Leopards has now been rescheduled to June 2 in Homa Bay.

Gor Mahia FC, 21-time Football Kenya Federation (FKF) champions, has announced it will fully refund fans who bought tickets for the postponed Mashemeji Derby originally set for May 11.

The highly anticipated clash between Gor Mahia and archrivals AFC Leopards was scheduled to take place at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled the stadium unavailable due to preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

CAF had proposed moving the match to Ulinzi Sports Complex and holding it behind closed doors. But the venue declined, citing internal safety concerns and the risk of vandalism.

“The venue declined to host the match, citing internal concerns around safety and the risk of vandalism. The two clubs have been formally informed of the situation and are aware of the reasons behind the decision to postpone the fixture,” FKF stated on May 9.

The fixture has since been rescheduled to Monday, June 2, at the newly renovated Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Gor Mahia confirmed that refunds will be processed upon request, but only for unused tickets.

“To fans who had bought tickets, refunds to be done next week upon receiving requests for unused tickets,” the statement read.

Gor Mahia also released new ticket prices for the rescheduled match — regular tickets will cost Sh300, while VIP access will go for Sh3,000. Tickets are available via tikiti.co.ke.

The Mashemeji Derby, one of Kenya’s most iconic football rivalries, dates back to May 5, 1968, when Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards first met. More than just a football match, it represents a long-standing rivalry between two of the country's most storied clubs.

Gor Mahia, currently on 54 points from 31 matches, will be aiming for a crucial win to close the gap on league leaders Kenya Police, who sit on 61 points. Leopards are sixth on the table with 46 points from the same number of matches.
