Omalla scores on return to send Gor Mahia to FKF Cup quarters

Benson Omalla scored deep into stoppage time on his return to Gor Mahia, helping the record FKF Cup champions edge Bandari and reach the MozzartBet Cup quarterfinals on a busy Saturday of knockout action.

Striker Benson Omalla marked his return to Gor Mahia with a late goal that helped the 11-time FKF Cup champions secure a 2-0 win over Bandari in Mombasa on Saturday, booking their place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 MozzartBet Cup.

In a tense Round of 16 clash at the Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa, the match remained goalless heading into injury time. Omalla broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute, before midfielder Alpha Onyango sealed the result with a second goal two minutes later.

The victory capped a memorable return for Omalla, who rejoined Gor Mahia for a third stint on Wednesday after FIFA authorised the release of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC), allowing him to complete his move to the record Kenyan champions.

Earlier at the same venue, Kariobangi Sharks overcame a spirited Denmak FC side 3-1 to reach the last eight. Denmak, a FKF Division Two side, had stunned Gor Mahia in last year’s tournament with a first-round penalty shootout victory. They threatened another upset after Mwinyi Ngurumo gave them a 10th-minute lead.

However, Sharks rallied in the second half with goals from Biko Omollo (53’), Ghai Panchol (85’), and Ally Salum (95’) to end Denmak’s impressive cup run.

At Dandora Stadium, FKF National Super League (NSL) leaders Nairobi United pulled off a shock by eliminating top flight side KCB 6-5 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.

FKF Cup action continues on Sunday with four more Round of 16 matches on the cards.

Kenya Police will host Kapenguria Heroes in the early kick-off at 1:30pm at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. That match will be followed by an all-top flight clash between Bidco United and Ulinzi Stars at 3pm, with the Soldiers designated as the away team.

In other fixtures, Murang’a Seal welcome Kibera Soccer at the SportPesa Arena in Murang’a, while Kakamega Homeboyz take on Shabana at Moi Stadium in Kisumu. Both matches will also kick off at 3pm.

Meanwhile, the Round of 16 fixture between Mara Sugar and Compel was not played as scheduled. Its timing remains subject to the outcome of AFC Leopards’ appeal against their disqualification. Leopards were earlier knocked out after Compel were awarded the result of their Round of 32 tie.
