The appointments come on the back of a rare trophyless campaign for Gor Mahia the first in nine years which led to a sweeping overhaul of the club’s technical bench.
Acting head coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno and his entire staff were shown the door in a decisive move to reset and rebuild ahead of the new season.
Announcing the appointments, Gor Mahia expressed optimism and excitement about the new leadership.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach,” read a club statement on social media. “The former Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned tactician. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor.”
Akonnor, 51, arrives in Nairobi with a strong resume. A former captain and coach of the Ghana national team, he earned 51 international caps and scored 13 goals during a decorated playing career.
He has previously managed top sides in the Ghana Premier League and brings both technical skills and continental experience that Gor Mahia hopes will translate into success domestically and in CAF competitions.
Supporting him on the bench is fellow Ghanaian Kobi-Mensah Bismark, who steps into the role of Assistant Head Coach.
“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Kobi-Mensah Bismark from Ghana as our new Assistant Head Coach. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Kobi,” the club added.
As part of a broader restructuring, the club has also confirmed the hiring of Owu Ben as the new goalkeeping coach. Owu is a former Ghana U-17 and U-20 international who brings a mix of playing and coaching experience from clubs including Asante Kotoko, Ashanti Gold, and Romanian side FC Galați Steel.
"We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ben Owu from Ghana as goalkeeper coach. Welcome to Mahia, Ben."
To bolster the club’s medical department, Gor Mahia has appointed Dr. Brian Odongo, a certified sports medicine specialist known for his work with elite athletes both locally and internationally.
"We are delighted to announce the appointment of Brian Odongo as our new Team Doctor. Brian is a certified sports medicine specialist with extensive experience across multiple disciplines. Welcome to Mahia, Brian."
The newly assembled technical bench is expected to begin pre-season preparations immediately, with high expectations to restore the club’s dominance in the Kenyan Premier League and stage a stronger show on the continental stage.
