Drama in SportPesa League opener as Shabana hit four, Bidco stun Gor Mahia

At Gusii Stadium, Shabana FC celebrated their homecoming in style, overpowering league debutants APS Bomet in a six-goal contest.

The opening weekend of the 2025/26 SportPesa League delivered high drama and top-quality football across three venues.

Shabana FC thrilled their fans with a 4-2 win over newcomers APS Bomet in Kisii, Ulinzi Stars snatched a last-minute 1-0 victory against Murang’a Seal, and Bidco United stunned giants Gor Mahia 1-0 at Kasarani.

At Gusii Stadium, Shabana FC celebrated their homecoming in style, overpowering league debutants APS Bomet in a six-goal contest.

Local favourite Brian Migiro Michira, donning the iconic number 10 shirt, set the pace with a first-half brace, including a confidently dispatched penalty in the 12th minute. APS Bomet’s troubles deepened when Ezekiah Omuri turned the ball into his own net, giving Shabana a commanding 3-0 lead.

The visitors, however, made history when goalkeeper Bob Cetric scored from the penalty spot in the 35th minute, cutting the deficit to 3-1 before half-time.

Cetric, last season’s top-scoring keeper in the National Super League, has now etched his name in the record books as the first goalkeeper to score in this Premier League campaign.

Tense finish

APS Bomet clawed back again late on, with Hansel Ochieng curling home a superb free kick in the 89th minute to set up a tense finish. But Shabana restored daylight in stoppage time, as Derrick Otieno struck to seal a 4-2 victory and deny the debutants a point.

In Murang’a, Ulinzi Stars left it until the very end to claim maximum points against Murang’a Seal. The Soldiers looked set for a draw until the 90th minute, when Paul Okoth rose highest to head in from a Telena Ochieng corner, snatching a dramatic 1-0 win.

Later at Kasarani, title hopefuls Gor Mahia were left shell-shocked by a resolute Bidco United.

Despite dominating long spells of the match, K’Ogalo were undone in the 86th minute when a defensive lapse gifted Bidco a penalty. Newton Ochieng stepped up and calmly slotted home, sealing a famous 1-0 victory and a dream start to Bidco’s campaign.

Matchweek One concludes tomorrow with Mathare United hosting Posta Rangers.
