Nairobi United Football Club is set for a major overhaul as Governor Johnson Sakaja, through the Sakaja Foundation, takes control of the NSL side. With a vision to propel the team to the FKF Premier League, Sakaja has promised to invest in infrastructure, player development, and new talent recruitment while emphasising discipline and a winning mindset.
Nairobi United Football Club is set for a major transformation as Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, through the Sakaja Foundation, assumes control of the National Super League (NSL) team.
During the official announcement on Friday, Governor Sakaja reaffirmed his dedication to backing the club through the foundation. However, he made it clear that discipline and a winning mentality would be essential for the team’s success.

“You will never lack anything. I want you to wake up, work, and think football. Put all your energy into this; I believe in winning. Let’s be winners,” Sakaja urged the players.
He also emphasized the importance of teamwork and unity within the squad, urging them to look out for one another. “Be your brother’s keeper, maintain the right mindset, and together, we will be winners. That is the story of Nairobi United,” he added.
Sakaja has set his sights on elevating the club to the FKF Premier League, stating that this goal can be achieved through hard work and dedication. “We must work together—no slacking. If you slack off, we will replace you. But if you work hard, the team will grow,” he cautioned.
The governor also touched on his broader vision for sports development in Nairobi. Besides supporting Nairobi United, his administration is focused on improving sports infrastructure across the city. While Dandora Stadium has been completed, construction on both Woodley and Kihumbuini stadiums is ongoing and nearing completion.
The transformation of Nairobi United will see substantial investments in training facilities, player recruitment, and management support. “Nairobi United has immense potential, and we are committed to making it a team that can compete with the best in the country,” Sakaja asserted.
Nairobi United narrowly missed promotion last season, finishing fourth, just outside the FKF Premier League promotion bracket. However, they started the new season on a high note with a 2-1 away victory against Mombasa Stars. The team now looks to maintain its momentum as they prepare to host Nzoia Sugar at Dandora Stadium on Saturday.
Osman Abdi, a key representative from the Sakaja Foundation, reassured the team of the foundation’s unwavering support. He also revealed plans to establish a football academy aimed at nurturing young talent. “This will be a great team. We want to assure you that young footballers will also be included in this initiative, mentoring them to become seasoned players,” Abdi stated.
