Five-year interfaith programme boosts Muslim-Christian unity in Garissa

Muhuri Garissa co-ordinator Abdihakim Shurie attributed the programme's success to the collective efforts of community leaders, youth, women, government officials and the media.

A five-year interfaith initiative has been hailed for making significant strides in promoting religious harmony in Garissa.

Implemented by Muhuri and the Joint Initiative for Strategic Religious Action (Jisra), the programme brought together Muslim and Christian communities following tensions fueled by past Al-Shabaab attacks.

According to stakeholders who gathered in Garissa town to evaluate the programme's progress, the initiative has improved interfaith dialogue and cooperation in the region.

County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo appreciated the programme for fostering collaboration between security agencies, places of worship and youth groups.

"Different faiths and traditions have found common ground in peace, dignity, and love," he said.

Mohamed's message was echoed by Pastor Lazarus Katiso, "Through dialogue, we realised we are all brothers and sisters with one enemy, Al-Shabaab."

Sheikh Omar Abdisitar noted that the programme has broken down long-held taboos, allowing Muslims and Christians to interact freely and invite each other to their places of worship.

"Today, we invite each other freely. This has strengthened our bond; no more suspicion and tension," he said.

Muhuri Garissa co-ordinator Abdihakim Shurie attributed the programme's success to the collective efforts of community leaders, youth, women, government officials and the media.
