Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve is dead

Speaker Kenedy Ngondi said Munuve was headed to the office in the CBD on Tuesday morning when he developed chest pains.

The Nairobi County Assembly has been thrown into mourning after Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve died suddenly on Tuesday morning, moments after developing chest pains while on his way to work.

He was rushed to a hospital along Kiambu Road, but tragically died in the car before receiving medical attention.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Kenedy Ngondi said Munuve was en route to the CBD when he began complaining of chest pain and collapsed.

Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“He suddenly collapsed and passed away this morning,” Ng’ondi said.

In a statement, the AAR Hospital clarified that Munuve was pronounced dead on arrival at 10.30 am.

Eulogising his member, the Speaker said Muneve was a dedicated leader and tireless servant of the people.

“His relentless commitment to the people of Kariobangi North and greater public service will be remembered with great respect and admiration,” Speaker Ngondi said.

The Speaker described the MCA’s death as a major loss not only to the assembly but also to the larger Nairobi County leadership.

“We mourn not only the loss of the colleague but also the brother whose presence enriched the institution and uplifted many,” he added.

President William Ruto eulogised the late Munuve as a bold, vocal and enterprising leader who served the people of Kariobangi North with focus and dedication.

“He was hardworking, progressive and with fresh ideas that changed the lives of many people,” he said.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who was among those who reacted to the news, described Munuve as a close friend and said the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

“From the assembly, we are still giving the family time to come to terms with the demise so that we can address this later,” Alai said.

Munuve, elected as an independent candidate, had become known for his outspoken stance on matters affecting residents, especially around governance and accountability.

He was among the vocal MCAs who had publicly challenged decisions made by the Nairobi County Government.

In one of his most recent actions, he questioned the establishment of a private company that had been contracted to handle garbage collection in the city, warning that the deal might be skewed and potentially a scam.

His concerns highlighted possible irregularities in the county’s waste management plans and brought attention to accountability in public contracts.

In 2023, he attempted to collect signatures to impeach Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Munuve’s unexpected passing has left fellow leaders and constituents in shock.
