Seven pathologists to conduct autopsy on Kariobangi MCA Joel Munuve

A detailed postmortem on the body of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve began on Friday at Lee Funeral Home, with seven pathologists and over 15 forensic experts overseeing the exercise.

The team is led by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor.

Munuve died on Tuesday after a short illness, prompting concern from colleagues and the public.

His death has drawn wide interest, with several parties sending representatives to be part of the postmortem process.

Lawyer Danstan Omari, speaking to the media outside the funeral home, confirmed that seven pathologists had been selected to oversee the examination.

“The first pathologist is Johansen Oduor, representing the government. Two, the family has sent a pathologist. The third one is from AAR. The fourth pathologist is from the County Assembly of Nairobi,” he said.

Omari also said that the County Government of Nairobi (Executive wing) had also sent a pathologist, and lastly, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, Babu Owino, who had two pathologists.

Omari, who was speaking on behalf of the family, said more parties with an interest in the matter were welcome to bring their own medical representatives.

“Anybody who has an interest in this matter is free to come with their pathologist,” he noted.

Beyond the pathologists, Omari said more than 15 other specialists are involved.

“Alongside the pathologists, there are more than 15 experts from the DCI, from the government analyst, from the forensics part and the scenes of crime,” he said.

A lab representative was also present to collect samples.

“There is a representative of a lab that has been sent here to come and take samples. We shall be updating you as the progress goes,” Omari added.

Background information

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who joined other ward representatives at the funeral home, said they had met with the doctors to provide background information on Munuve’s health and routine.

“We have had a brief meeting with the doctors just to inform them of the kind of history the deceased had, how he had been living in the recent past,” Alai explained.

The ODM MCA said the team shared details of Munuve’s recent activities, including what he ate and his last engagements at the Assembly.

“From the food he ate, from the last meeting he had in the assembly, so that they can be able to offer their assistance,” Alai said.

Munuve, elected as an independent candidate in the 2022 General Elections, was known for his firm stand and independence in political matters.

In his ward, he was seen as a hands-on grassroots leader who preferred spending time with his constituents rather than sitting in offices at City Hall.

His ability to speak English, Kiswahili, and Dholuo helped him connect with a wide audience. He regularly appeared on vernacular media to speak about public interest issues.

During a special sitting of the Nairobi County Assembly on Wednesday, MCAs honoured Munuve for his integrity and fearlessness.

Many described him as a dedicated leader who held firm to his values and remained focused on the needs of the people.

Nominated MCA Joyce Kamau called him “a mirror of the Assembly”, who constantly reminded his fellow leaders of their responsibility to serve the public.

Ngara Ward MCA Chege Mwaura urged the Assembly to carry forward Munuve’s legacy. He challenged fellow MCAs to pursue the statements and oversight work that Munuve had already initiated.

The postmortem is expected to provide answers as to what led to Munuve’s sudden passing. For now, family, friends, colleagues, and constituents continue to mourn a leader who many say left a lasting impression through his work and words.
