In a quiet but significant shift, WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that changes the way users start group conversations.
For the first time, it is now possible to create a WhatsApp group without having to add any members right away, a move that gives users more flexibility and control over how and when their group chats take shape.

Traditionally, creating a group on WhatsApp required selecting at least one contact before the group could be formed.
The new update removes that step.
Users can now set up the group’s name, profile photo, and even define its purpose before inviting anyone else to join.
This feature is already being tested among beta users on both Android and iOS, and it’s expected to roll out more widely in the coming weeks.
According to Meta, the idea is to make it easier for people to organise group chats around events, work projects, or shared interests, even if they have not finalised the guest list yet.
“This change supports more thoughtful, intentional group creation,” said a Meta spokesperson.
“It’s especially useful when you’re planning something and want to get the group structure ready before adding people.”
Beyond group planning, the new option is expected to appeal to users who use group chats for personal organisation, such as storing notes, links, or media files.
