Mombasa Phoenix wins Palestine Freedom cup 7-a-side tournament

After a series of intense knockout rounds, Mombasa Phoenix emerged as champions, edging out the formidable Muslim Brothers in a closely fought final.

The spirit of solidarity and sportsmanship shone brightly on the coast as Mombasa hosted the Palestine Freedom Cup, a 7-a-side soccer tournament that brought together passionate teams and supporters in a powerful show of unity with the Palestinian cause.

The tournament was sponsored by the Mombasa branch of Kenya na Palestine, Kenya Palestine Solidarity Movement (KPSM) and hosted by the Al-Qaim Community Organisation of Mombasa, kicking off this year’s #Week4Palestine global campaign under the theme #RedCardIsrael.

Held over the weekend at Serani Sports Ground, Mbaraki, the event featured a thrilling lineup of local teams competing not only for the trophy but also to raise awareness and express resistance through sport.

After a series of intense knockout rounds, Mombasa Phoenix emerged as champions, edging out the formidable Muslim Brothers in a closely fought final. The match was marked by skilful play, passion, and a deep sense of purpose.

“The energy on the pitch was incredible,” said one of the organisers. “These young men played with heart—not just for victory, but for justice.”

Spectators—including families, activists, and community leaders—gathered in large numbers. Palestinian flags and banners calling for freedom and justice filled the venue, and a short solidarity ceremony was held before the final match. Educational booths highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank.

“This is more than football,” said a player from Muslim Brothers. “It’s a way for us to say, ‘We stand with Palestine. And we reject apartheid, occupation, and oppression.”

Plans are already underway to make the Palestine Freedom Cup an annual event blending sport, advocacy, and community action in support of global justice.

Awards were presented by Abdulqadir A. Nasser, the Secretary General of Kenya na Palestine [Kenya Palestine Solidarity Movement (KPSM)]; Abdallah Ali Sheikh, a member of the Mimbasa Branch of Kenya na Palestine; and Abdulrazak Hassan Mohamed, the Chairman of the Al-Qaim Community Organisation.
