Governor Wanga blames police, disinformation in MP Were's killing

Governor Wanga alleged that a well-funded and coordinated disinformation campaign is being used to divert attention from the circumstances surrounding the killing. She suggested that those behind the murder are exploiting social media to distort public perception of the MP.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has alleged that a deliberate effort is underway to conceal the truth behind the murder of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were, whose shooting on April 30 shocked the nation.
Speaking at the late MP’s home on Saturday, she claimed that the online narrative surrounding his character is part of a wider plot designed to obscure the real cause of his death.

Governor Wanga alleged that a well-funded and coordinated disinformation campaign is being used to divert attention from the circumstances surrounding the killing. She suggested that those behind the murder are exploiting social media to distort public perception of the MP.
“I want to say it here: the disinformation that has flooded social media is no coincidence. It is well-orchestrated, mobilised, and funded — and the aim is to cover up the murder of Were,” she said.
The governor directed blame at the police, questioning why no action had been taken despite the late MP having filed formal reports about threats to his life.
She revealed that Were had reached out directly to the Inspector General of Police before his death, expressing fears for his safety.
“Numerous times, Were reported that his life was in danger. I know that he even wrote to the Inspector General of Police, and I want him to tell us what action, if any, was taken,” Wanga said.
She demanded accountability from the authorities and called for a thorough investigation into both the murder and the events leading up to it. She expressed outrage over the manner of the MP’s death, describing it as inhumane and shameful.
“We will not take this lying down. We have counted one too many. Were was killed like a chicken, humiliated like a thief, yet he never stole from anyone. We don’t want stories or cover-ups,” she added.
Her remarks came amid growing speculation on social media, where some users have portrayed the late legislator as a man prone to violence and often surrounded by aggressive individuals. Wanga dismissed these narratives, insisting they form part of the same cover-up being orchestrated by unknown parties.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has stated that significant progress is being made in the case. Investigators say they have narrowed down a list of potential suspects and are working to uncover the motive behind the killing.
“This detailed analysis has yielded significant leads, enabling investigators to narrow down potential suspects. While the motive for this heinous act remains under investigation, preliminary findings suggest it was a targeted and premeditated attack. The DCI is pursuing all angles to uncover the circumstances surrounding this incident,” read a statement from the agency.
The Kasipul MP was shot near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi at approximately 7:30 pm by unidentified attackers on a motorcycle. His killing occurred shortly after he had expressed concerns to security agencies, saying he believed he was being followed.
The National Police Service echoed the DCI’s position, stating that the fatal shooting appeared to be “targeted and predetermined,” indicating a strong likelihood of prior planning.
