Six arrested as police recover stolen phones worth Sh3 million in Nairobi

Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah pointed out that phone theft is increasingly becoming a cross-border crime.

Police in Nairobi have arrested six suspects and recovered stolen mobile phones worth Sh3 million, along with Sh614,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah said the phones were stolen from various parts of the city.

The police commander also pointed out that phone theft is increasingly becoming a cross-border crime.

He noted that some stolen phones from Kenya are transported to neighbouring countries for sale, while phones stolen in those countries often end up on the Kenyan market. This cross-border movement complicates efforts to track and recover stolen devices.

“This operation has been ongoing, but it is through the exploitation of intelligence and strong cooperation with the public that we have been able to successfully apprehend these suspects,” he said.

He noted that some stolen phones from Kenya are transported to neighbouring countries for sale, while phones stolen in those countries often end up on the Kenyan market.

“Some phones stolen in Kenya are taken to neighbouring countries to be sold, while phones from our neighbours are also sold here. This cross-border trade makes it difficult for us to keep track of the stolen devices,” he added.

Sedah noted that most of the thieves involved in these crimes use motorcycles, as he urged victims of gadget theft to report incidents without delay.

He also emphasised the need for victims to obtain receipts when filing theft reports, as this helps the police in their investigations.

Members of the public have been urged to take personal responsibility for their safety by being mindful of how they carry their belongings while moving around.

Sedah emphasised that security is a collective responsibility and assured that the police are committed to creating a safe environment where people can use their phones without fear of theft.

He also called on the public to continue sharing information with the police, stressing that crime prevention is a shared duty and that timely information from the community is crucial in combating crime.
