Police boss Douglas Kanja dismisses MP George Koimburi abduction claims, says no evidence found at the scene

Kanja said on Sunday, May 26, 2025, the NPS was alerted to an amateur video circulating on social and mainstream media showing the MP abandoned at a farm in Juja. Police officers from Juja promptly visited the alleged site and documented the area thoroughly.

The National Police Service (NPS) has cast doubt on the reported abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi following a viral video where he was seen lying on the ground, claiming he had been dumped in a coffee plantation in Juja.

In a statement on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said there is no evidence at the crime scene where Koimburi was reportedly found.

Kanja said on Sunday, May 26, 2025, the NPS was alerted to an amateur video circulating on social and mainstream media showing the MP abandoned at a farm in Juja. Police officers from Juja promptly visited the alleged site and documented the area thoroughly.

However, Kanja said a comparison of the vegetation and road dimensions at the scene with those shown in the video revealed they did not match.

They noted that Moses Kariuki, the caretaker of the coffee farm owned by businessman Jimi Wanjigi, told police he had not witnessed the incident.

Following this, officers went to Plainsview Hospital in Ruiru, where Koimburi was reportedly rushed to receive treatment. Kanja said they confirmed that the vehicle used to transport him, registration number KCJ 660P, was registered to the MP and driven by Frida Njeri, who was also the first responder at the alleged crime scene.

The hospital, however, did not disclose details of the treatment or first aid administered, limiting the ability to assess the extent of Koimburi’s injuries.

NPS said a specialised team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, supported by forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, was deployed to investigate the scene thoroughly, gather evidence, and establish the facts surrounding the allegations.

“So far, five individuals have been interviewed and given statements, with more expected, including Koimburi himself. However, initial attempts to question the MP were blocked by his family,” Kanja said.

Kanja emphasised that the progress demonstrates the NPS’s commitment to uncovering the truth about the abduction allegations with professionalism and diligence. He assured that all leads would be pursued, forensic evidence analysed, and any perpetrators brought to justice.

Kanja also highlighted that Koimburi has been under investigation for a land fraud case, with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) having issued consent for his prosecution.

'Evading arrest'

According to the NPS, on Friday, May 23, 2025, the MP, aware of the police’s intention to arrest him, evaded arrest by escaping on a motorcycle accompanied by his private security and switched off his phone.

They noted that his car, which was only occupied by his driver, was intercepted and the driver arrested but later released after giving a statement.

“The MP resurfaced only on Sunday, May 25, coinciding with the abduction claims,” Kanja said.

The public has now been urged to report any information related to the incident depicted in the video to their nearest police station or via toll-free numbers 999, 911, 112, or #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203).

The MP’s alleged abduction took place on Sunday, outside a church in Kiambu County. Witnesses and Koimburi’s wife, Ann, recounted that two men disguised as worshippers overpowered the MP after a church service in Mugutha and forced him into a silver Subaru Forester with altered number plates.

“We had just left church, and it is normal for Mheshimiwa to greet people, but they quickly turned on him and forced him into the car,” she said.

“They started hitting me from outside, and I felt as if my arm was broken. I had no choice but to let go of my husband.”

She noted that the men, dressed in plain clothes, did not identify themselves. Video footage taken by witnesses showed the vehicle speeding away.

The DCI denied involvement in the abduction but confirmed the MP has been under investigation since Friday for alleged land fraud and misuse of Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
