The victims were reportedly shot after police allegedly opened fire on a group of individuals said to have invaded private land within the Angama Conservancy.
The incident happened in the Transmara area, Kilgoris Constituency, where residents are reported to have clashed with police officers over a land dispute.
The injured were taken to health facilities in the area, including Lolgorian Subcounty Hospital, where they are receiving treatment for serious gunshot wounds.
IPOA said its investigation is guided by the law, which allows it to look into deaths and serious injuries caused by police action.
“In line with the provisions of Section 7(1)(a)(x) of the IPOA Act, CAP 86 of the Laws of Kenya which mandates the investigation of deaths and serious injuries resulting from police actions, the dispatched team has been instructed to gather all information relevant to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident,” reads the statement by IPOA.
The Authority sent condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and to those nursing injuries.
It also called on residents to remain calm and let investigations take their course.
“The Authority extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and to those who were injured. It also appeals to residents to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course,” IPOA said.
The Authority promised to share its findings after completing the investigation and said it will make the necessary recommendations to other government agencies.
“IPOA will make appropriate recommendations to the relevant State agencies and will update the public on its findings upon the conclusion of its investigations,” the statement reads further.
The Authority also assured the public of its commitment to carry out the probe fairly.
“Across its work, IPOA commits to remain independent, impartial, fair and apolitical in all its investigations,” Issack concluded.
