The court also heard that Wanjala had been linked to other similar killings involving minors. He had earlier confessed to detectives, explaining how he lured and murdered several children.

A High Court in Eldoret has sentenced Evans Juma Wanjala to life imprisonment for defiling and murdering Stacy Achieng, a 10-year-old girl whose body was found dumped in a forest in Moi’s Bridge, Uasin Gishu County.

Justice Reuben Nyakundi, who delivered the ruling, said the evidence brought before the court proved that Wanjala carefully planned and carried out the crime. He said the act was brutal and unforgivable, calling it an “offence against humanity.”

“The doctor’s reports indicated that she was seriously injured and her body was placed in a bag before being dumped in the forest where it was found,” the judge said.

Wanjala was accused of defiling the child and then killing her to cover up the crime. Justice Nyakundi said he had the option to leave the girl alive, even after the assault, but instead chose to take her life.

“You defiled the young girl and then decided that she would not live again and that her parents would not see her alive again,” he said.

The murder happened between 2020 and 2021, during a period when several children in Moi’s Bridge had gone missing under similar circumstances.

The court said the minor may have trusted Wanjala because children often feel safe around adults from their community.

“You turned against her, defiled her and then decided to kill her,” the judge said.

DNA tests placed Wanjala at the centre of the crime. Samples taken from Stacy and her clothing matched those collected from the accused.

“Medical experts confirmed that the minor was defiled and strangled to death. Even DNA tests on blood samples collected from the minor’s t-shirt and underwear matched with samples taken from the accused,” Justice Nyakundi stated.

He added that Wanjala showed no remorse and had no clear reason for the killing.

“You planned the offence and executed it brutally. This was what I call an offence against humanity,” the judge said.

The court also heard that Wanjala had been linked to other similar killings involving minors. He had earlier confessed to detectives, explaining how he lured and murdered several children.

During the investigation, he led officers to different scenes where the crimes were allegedly committed.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations presented his confession in court, describing in detail how he carried out the attacks.

In Stacy’s case, the judge said the evidence, including medical reports, witness statements and DNA results, proved that Wanjala was guilty.

“He cut short the life of an innocent young girl and did so brutally, and hence deserved life imprisonment,” Nyakundi said while issuing the sentence.
