CHAN 2024: Details of stadium entry for fans, road closures ahead of opening fixture

Nairobi is gearing up for an exciting month of football as the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) officially kicks off this weekend.

For the first time in the tournament’s history, CHAN is being co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, with Kenya’s Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, serving as key venues.

As fans prepare to watch some of the continent’s finest home-based talent, organisers have put in place detailed plans to ensure smooth access to the stadiums and minimal disruption across the city.

At Kasarani, which will host the highly anticipated opening match between Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, August 3, at 3 pm, four access gates will be in operation.

Entry to the stadium will be strictly controlled based on the type of ticket purchased and the direction from which fans approach.

Only two categories of tickets are available to the public: Regular and Silver. All tickets must be purchased in advance via the official platform, chan.mookh.com.

No physical tickets will be accepted at the gates, and none will be sold on match days.

Fans approaching Kasarani from areas such as TRM, Mwiki, Ngomongo and the Safari Park Footbridge will use Entries 1 to 4, passing through ticket verification points located at the TRM Interchange, opposite Safari Park Hotel, Ngomongo Police Station, and Kasarani Gate 11.

These fans will then proceed to Gates 1, 2 or 3.

Gate 3, which also accommodates fans arriving via the Safari Park Footbridge, will share the same verification points as Gates 1 and 2.

Gate 4 at Kasarani is strictly reserved for presidential guests, VVIPs, accredited media and other officially recognised personnel.

This gate is accessible solely via the Safari Park Footbridge, with ticket checks conducted directly at the gate. Only accredited vehicles, including those transporting dignitaries, will be permitted through this route.

At Nyayo National Stadium, which will also host several key fixtures during the tournament, a similar four-gate system has been established.

Gates 1 and 2 will be accessible from Uhuru Highway, while Gate 3 will serve those arriving from Lang’ata Road and the Posta area.

Fans holding Regular and Silver tickets will undergo verification at designated points along Bunyala Road, Lusaka Road, T-Mall and Mombasa Road before being granted entry.

Gate 4 at Nyayo is exclusively for VIP and VVIP ticket holders, who will access the stadium via Douglas Wakiihuri Road (also known as Aerodrome Drive). Verification for these guests will take place after the gate, and only accredited vehicles will be allowed through.

In anticipation of heavy traffic and to enhance security around the stadiums, police have announced the temporary closure of several key roads in Nairobi on Sunday, August 3.

Aerodrome Road will be closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout. One carriageway of Lang’ata Road will also be shut between Madaraka and Lusaka Roundabouts, while a section of Mombasa Road from Lusaka to Bunyala Roundabout will similarly be affected.

To ease movement, the Nairobi Traffic Commandant has outlined alternative routes.

Motorists travelling from Mombasa Road towards the Central Business District are advised to use Likoni–Enterprise Road near General Motors or take the Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni.

Those coming from Lang’ata Road should consider using Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road from Mbagathi Roundabout.

Drivers heading out of the city centre towards Thika, Ruiru, Juja or other northern destinations are encouraged to use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.

Motorists arriving from Thika Road may opt for the Eastern Bypass or reroute via Kiambu or Limuru Road.

Additionally, public service vehicles ferrying fans to Kasarani Stadium should follow Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and Ngomongo Road to reach Ngomongo Roundabout.
