MUHURI files complaint over alleged police assault on rights officer

A human rights officer attached to Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) has filed a formal complaint with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) after allegedly being assaulted by plainclothes police officers at Moi International Airport.
Francis Auma, who serves as MUHURI’s Rapid Response Officer, claims he was attacked while at the airport shortly after dropping off a colleague.

According to the organisation, the assault occurred at around 9:33 pm, when unidentified individuals in civilian clothing reportedly approached Auma before physically assaulting him.
The alleged incident left Auma hospitalised at Bomu Hospital in Mombasa, where he is said to be receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the confrontation.
Accompanied by MUHURI Director Khelef Khalifa and Coast Civil Society Organisations Network for Human Rights chairperson Zedekiah Adika, Auma then visited the IPOA offices in Mombasa to formally lodge the complaint, confirming that investigations into the incident are underway.
"We have also recorded a statement with the police and obtained a P3 form. The officers involved are known, and we expect prompt action," he said.
MUHURI has condemned the attack, terming it an act of intimidation against human rights defenders. The organisation has vowed to pursue justice for Auma and called on the government to uphold the rule of law.
The motive behind the alleged assault remains unclear, but MUHURI has linked the incident to Auma’s ongoing work documenting police actions and supporting victims of abuse, including recent cases involving activist Mwabili Mwagodi.
