DCI granted 21 days to analyse electronic devices in Koimburi abduction case

The case stems from a May 25, 2025, incident in which MP Koimburi was reported missing shortly after attending a church service. CCTV footage later surfaced showing him being bundled into a vehicle.

Investigations into the alleged abduction of Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi will take 21 days, as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues to extract and analyse data from mobile phones and electronic devices seized from the accused, a Nairobi court heard on Tuesday.

The prosecution told Milimani Magistrate Mark Ekhubi that the confiscated devices had been submitted to the DCI headquarters and its forensic laboratory for examination, and the extraction process was still ongoing.

“The electronic devices were taken to the DCI forensic labs, and the extraction is ongoing. We anticipate releasing the items within 21 days,” the prosecution said.

The five accused in the case, including MP George Koimburi, Peter Kiratu, David Macharia Gatana, Cyrus Kieru Muhia and Murang’a MCA Grace Nduta Wairimu, were all present in court and represented by their respective counsels.

The defence confirmed that they had received part of the prosecution’s evidence and consented to the proposed 21-day timeline for the full disclosure of the remaining materials.

The court was also informed that discussions between the prosecution and defence had resulted in a consensus on the release of vehicles that had been impounded during the investigations. The parties agreed that the motor vehicles would be returned within seven days, provided no objections were raised by the investigating officers.

“We discussed the release of the motor vehicles and agreed they will be released after seven days,” one of the defence lawyers told the court.

Magistrate Ekhubi acknowledged the cooperation between the two parties, stating that it was helping streamline the proceedings.

He scheduled the matter for mention on September 10, 2025, to confirm the status of evidence disclosure and the return of the seized electronic devices and vehicles.

The case stems from a May 25, 2025, incident in which MP Koimburi was reported missing shortly after attending a church service. CCTV footage later surfaced showing him being bundled into a vehicle. He was subsequently found and admitted to Karen Hospital, where he has been receiving medical attention.

The prosecution alleges that Koimburi and the four co-accused conspired to defeat justice by stage-managing the MP’s abduction to avoid arrest and arraignment at the Kiambu Law Courts, where he was expected to face four counts of land fraud as directed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

All five accused persons were previously granted cash bail of Sh300,000 each. The court also barred them from contacting any witnesses and directed them to continue reporting to the investigating officer as required.
