One dead, six injured in collision involving Royal Liner bus on Kisumu-Busia road near Lela

A tragic collision involving a Royal Liner bus has left one person dead and six others injured near Lela on the Kisumu-Busia road, officials have confirmed.
Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina said investigations into the crash are ongoing.

The crash reportedly happened when a flatbed trailer-truck attempting to overtake at a sharp bend just past Lela in Maseno collided with the bus from behind. A fuel tanker was also involved.
Images and videos circulating online showed severe damage to the bus driver's side from the collision. First responders, including police officers, were seen assisting with rescue operations and managing the scene.
Deadly crashes
This incident comes amid a series of recent deadly crashes across the country. Just a day earlier, an ENA Coach bus travelling from Nairobi to Migori overturned after a trailer behind it lost brakes near the Escarpments in Mai Mahiu, killing two passengers—a woman and a child.
Similarly, on August 8, a school bus carrying mourners overturned at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu-Kakamega road, killing 21 people on the spot.
The death toll has since risen to 26 as some injured victims died in the hospital. Preliminary reports indicate the driver lost control before the bus veered off the road.
In response to the surge in accidents since early August, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) have pledged tighter enforcement of traffic laws.
On Sunday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said police are working with other state agencies to investigate these crashes quickly.
Expeditious investigations
“In the last few days, we have witnessed a spate of road accidents across the country. As a Service, we extend our condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a quick recovery to those recovering in hospitals. The National Police Service is working collaboratively with various state agencies to conduct thorough and expeditious investigations to determine the causes of these accidents,” he said.
“Road crashes cause immense suffering to the affected families, and every possible measure must be taken to prevent further loss of life.”
The police stressed that most accidents can be prevented if road users avoid risky behaviours such as speeding, reckless overtaking, drink-driving, overloading, driver fatigue, and careless crossing.
“It should be appreciated that life is not only precious but irreplaceable. To effectively prevent deaths on our roads, all stakeholders in road transport must play their rightful roles,” NPS added.
