Murkomen: Security agencies probing claims of Jubaland forces in Mandera

The National Government has broken its silence over the reported presence of Jubaland forces in Mandera.
Speaking in Busia on Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen denied claims that the government was aware of their presence, adding that security agencies are investigating reports that Jubaland forces may have illegally crossed into the country.

He, however, stated that if individuals have crossed the border as a result of fighting in the neighbouring country, the government will establish their identity and handle them in accordance with international law.
“The government’s priority is to ensure that no criminal elements enter the country. Those seeking refuge will be assisted in collaboration with the Somali government, with whom Kenya enjoys good relations,” he said in response to questions from journalists.
The Cabinet Secretary further warned politicians against politicising the matter, stressing that security concerns are handled carefully in the best interests of the nation.
He also assured the Mandera residents that their safety and security were guaranteed and that security agencies remained on high alert to address any threats.
Murkomen’s remarks came days after Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif raised concerns over a spillover of Jubaland forces into Mandera, terming it a threat to national security.
The governor further argued that their presence undermines the country’s sovereignty.
“Good health is inseparable from peace and security. Recently, fighting between the Somali National Army and Jubaland forces spilt across our border, disrupting lives and threatening the safety of our people. Disturbingly, some of those forces have been hosted within Kenyan territory, compromising our national sovereignty and endangering our citizens. As Governor of Mandera, I strongly condemn this," he said.
“The safety and security of our people is non-negotiable. We call on all actors, local, regional and international, to respect our borders and support peace and stability in the region,” he added.
