Nurses, Isiolo County ink deal, end two-month-long strike

The strike, led by members of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), had left health facilities across the county understaffed, with critical services interrupted.

Nurses in Isiolo County are expected back on the job following a breakthrough agreement that officially ends the nearly two-month-long strike that had crippled local health services.

The deal, struck after weeks of intense negotiations, was announced Wednesday by county officials and union leaders, marking a major win for dialogue and patient-centred leadership.

"Most of the issues are budget-related and will be implemented once the supplementary budget is approved," said County Secretary Dade Boru, who represented Governor Abdi Guyo during the talks.

The strike, led by members of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), had left health facilities across the county understaffed, with critical services interrupted.

KNUN National Chair Joseph Ngwasi praised the negotiations, calling them "a show of good faith," and urged striking nurses to resume duty within 48 hours.

Isiolo Branch Secretary General Martin Muse echoed the call, describing the outcome as "a product of unity and persistence".

The talks were led by Joseph Mwangi Komu, Acting Chair of the County Public Service Board, and Dade, with technical support from Dr Mohammed Muhamud, Chief Officer for Health Services.

"We must always turn to dialogue and mutual respect. That's how we build lasting solutions," said Komu during the announcement.

Dr Mohammed emphasised that full restoration of services hinges on the immediate implementation of the return-to-work formula.

The County Government's commitment to addressing health workers' grievances was widely acknowledged, with both parties calling the agreement a milestone for future labour relations.
